Portland Dixieland Jazz Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of traditional jazz music.  Jazz is a uniquely American art form which is a fusion of many musical elements, including ragtime, the blues, African, Spanish, and West Indian rhythms, and traditional European marches, quadrilles, folk songs and even hymns.  Most historians agree that early jazz emerged in New Orleans shortly after 1900, although it was also developed and spread in honky tonks and dance halls across the country.
PDJS brings in the best local and regional bands monthly to present a variety of traditional jazz styles for listening and dancing.  Styles of music range from classic New Orleans, to West Coast Revival, to swing.  Even an occasional waltz is played at dancers’ request.
Each session includes several intermission jam sessions for local musicians as well.  Food and beverage service is available.  Young people under the age of 21 are welcome, but they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Membership in PDJS is $20 single or $30 couple, which includes the newsletter and reduced admission to sessions.  Normal admission for each session is $10 per member and $15 per non-member.
Come join us!  America’s unique art form is also lots of fun!
